OCEP Afternoon Clinic on May 31, 2025

We had a scheduled Retina Clinic in the afternoon of May 31, 2025.

Dr. Zackery Oakey, Retina Specialist at Blue Coast Retina, was the Provider for the clinic. He was returning to the OCEP clinic after being the first Provider to attend the OCEP clinic since we started at the new location!

Dr. Oakey evaluated patients, provided them with treatment, including injections and laser treatments and explained and discussed outcomes with the patients, while also finding the time to teach those who shadowed him. Thank you Dr. Oakey!

One of our objectives is to train the next generation of healthcare personnel. In that regard, we allow experienced volunteers to learn new techniques, which allows them to get more experience in the clinic and for their future goals in life. In the picture, Clarisa Bloemhof, a senior medical student at California University of Science and Medicine, who has been volunteering at the OCEP Clinic for many years. She is focused on getting into Ophthalmology residency and then onto a retina fellowship. And we support her goals!

Our dedicated group of volunteers prep the patient for the Provider, with volunteers performing intake, vision, eye pressure, eye scans, etc. In these pictures, Erica performs eye pressure check and also checks for anterior chamber angle to make sure the patient can be dilated. If the angle was suspected to be narrow, she would then recommend an Anterion OCT test (donated by Heidelberg Engineering), which will provide clarity on the angle. Once clear, the patient gets dilated to be seen by the Provider for a dilated retinal examination.

Our volunteers come from all over Southern California. We appreciate each and every one of them who is committed to serve and help, and in the process, learn and teach.

Thank you all! We appreciate your help and support.
